Shit I Like: Revenge Is a Dish Best Served Cold

Sometimes being a hater pays off

It’s no secret that the world is a mess and there’s a new horror every day. But there is also some good things still happening, and every Friday I like to look back at the week and share some shit I liked.

On a March 19, 2024 Instagram post to countdown the release of her newest album Cowboy Carter, Beyonce wrote:

This album has been over five years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t."

Many of us believe this was in reference to her iconic 2016 Country Music Awards performance with the Chicks (formerly the Dixie Chicks) where they performed Beyonce’s Daddy Lessons and then led into a mashup of the Chick’s Long Time Gone.

The reactions were also iconic, but for a different reason. The racist reactions from those in the audience and online made headlines of their own. And when Texas Hold ‘Em became the first #1 song by a Black woman on the Hot Country Song Charts? And then when the album was finally released and she became the first Black woman to have a #1 album on the Top Country Albums Chart? They were MAAAAAADDD. Even Luke Bryan, when trying to guess why she didn’t receive any CMA nominations for Cowboy Carter, said:

"Everybody loved that Beyoncé made a country album. Nobody's mad about it. But where things get a little tricky and, and you know — if you're gonna make country albums, come into our world and be country with us a little bit. Beyoncé can do it exactly what she wants to. She's probably the biggest star in music. But come to an award show and high-five us, and have fun and get in the family too. And I'm not saying she didn't do that."

Telling a Southern Black woman — whose family lineage extends into Alabama and Louisiana that she needs to “…come into our world and be country with us a little bit” —- is audacious at best. He quickly backtracked because DUH!

So imagine how SICK to their stomachs they were on Sunday when Beyonce won Best Country Duo/Group Performance for II Most Wanted with Miley Cyrus, becoming the first Black woman win a Grammy for a country song since 1975. She then went onto become the first Black woman to win a Grammy for Best Country Album, becoming the first Black female solo artist to win a Grammy for country music. And then FINALLY, after multiple nominations and controversial (to put it mildly) losses, Beyonce finally won Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter, becoming the first Black woman to win the coveted award this century, 26 years after Lauryn Hill won back in 1999. In Grammy history, only FOUR Black women have won Album of the Year (some bullshit).

The country music industry treated her dirty and she got her lick back. YOU LOVE TO SEE IT.

Kendrick Lamar has spent half of 2024 showing us how great it is to be a hater. I won’t get into how this whole thing started, mainly because I don’t care. But it’s come to my attention that other rappers really don’t like Aubrey Drake Graham, which is very fair. While Kendrick and Drake went back and forth in a good old fashion rap beef, Kendrick to it to a whole ‘nother level and killed it with Not Like Us.

My God today. This was the best Drake diss since Pusha T.’s The Story of Adidon, the song that forced Drake to publicly reveal that he had a son.

Not Like Us has everything: catchy verse, a tune that makes you want to shake ass, and the whole thing is a reference to Drake’s HIGHLY problematic history with young women and girls. Drake decided to sue Kendrick over the song for dumb reasons. Personally, I think meet the grahams was a lot more disrespectful, but I’m not a creep around young girls, so what do I know.

On Sunday, Kendrick ran it up by winning five Grammy awards for Not Like Us: Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best Music Video. I guess the Grammy’s don’t like Drake either. I doubt the rest of his peers do since they all sang A-MINOOOOOOOORRRR when Kendrick walked up to receive his award.

For no reason at all, I checked and the Mercedes-Benz Superdome can seat up to 72,308 people for a football game.

The shit I DON’T like is that we’re never going to see Fuckin’ Problems performed live. And that’s a tragedy for all of us
